Duterte-Carpio debate over Western Philippine Sea will not benefit the country – Senators – The Manila Times
A debate between President Rodrigo Duterte and former Senior Associate Judge (SAJ) Antonio Carpio on the Western Philippine Sea (WPS) is unnecessary because the country will not benefit, senators said.
Carpio accepted the challenge of the president’s debate, and the Philippine Bar even offered to host and moderate in order to provide a “balanced arena” for the two lawyers.
Asked about the verbal brawl between Duterte and Carpio, Senate President Vicente Sotto 3e provided an enigmatic response: “I doubt the country will benefit from such a debate.”
But Senator Aquilino Pimentel 3e, chairman of the Senate Committee on External Relations, was more expressive, saying it was not necessary because it will not solve anything.
He said that such a debate would only give the whole world the impression that we are divided on the issue.
Senator Panfilo Lacson, Chairman of the Senate Defense and Security Committee, said that public debate is always healthy in a democratic environment as long as it is confined to the issue at hand and does not descend to the gutter level .
He added that a question came to my mind: “What do we gain from the debate assuming it comes to fruition?” Another disastrous result is the further division that only China will benefit from. “
