The Iowa Rural Schools Museum in Odebolt will be the starting point for the Iowa Country Schools Conference October 8-9.

SAC CITY – Country school enthusiasts will gather in Sac County on October 8-9 to celebrate Iowa’s rich educational and agricultural history. The two-day conference will include visits to several well-preserved rural schools, guest speakers, and the opportunity to learn about the interplay between agricultural and educational programs of the past 150 years. Janet Secor of Fort Dodge and Bruce Perry of Sac City will be two of the guest speakers.

The statewide annual conference is open to anyone who loves history and enjoys sharing stories. The program will begin in Odebolt, which is home to one of Iowa’s best rural school museums.

In addition to participating in programs on preserving country schools and family ties to country schools, participants will visit preserved country schools in Odebolt, Sac City and surrounding areas.

As communities developed on the Prairies, public schools were among the top priorities of the new settlers. The desire of parents to improve the lives of their children inspired the theme of the conference, “One-room schools: the start of big dreams”.

Participants will visit Sac City’s Chautauqua Pavilion, which hosts the county’s annual eighth-grade graduation ceremonies, dine at the Sac Community Center, which is a converted school, and tour the Peterson Pioneer Home in Odebolt to have a taste of life in early Sac County years. Other attractions will include tours of Adams Bank (now First State Bank), Grant # 5 School House in Moorhead Park and Prairie Pedlar, Cook # 8 School House tour, Pedlar Gardens and a pre-fab barn Sears.

Pre-registration is encouraged. The forms are available now at www.iowaruralschoolsmuseum.net or by calling 712-668-4285.

Dubbo drive-thru jab clinic opens https://western-rollarama.com/dubbo-drive-thru-jab-clinic-opens/ https://western-rollarama.com/dubbo-drive-thru-jab-clinic-opens/#respond Sat, 28 Aug 2021 05:56:00 +0000 https://western-rollarama.com/dubbo-drive-thru-jab-clinic-opens/ The state’s first drive-thru vaccination clinic has opened in Dubbo, as an outbreak in the regional city approaches 400 cases. The state’s first drive-thru vaccination clinic has opened in Dubbo, as an outbreak in the regional city approaches 400 cases.

Of the 1,035 new cases diagnosed in New South Wales on Friday, 46 were diagnosed in the west and far west of the state.

34 other cases were detected in Dubbo, bringing the epidemic to 383.

In an effort to control infections, residents of the regional center can now seek treatment in the comfort and safety of their cars.

Pfizer and AstraZeneca are now available at the Dubbo Showground clinic, although reservations are required.

“This is a real blow to the Dubbo area and it will make a huge difference to people who may have had a hard time accessing a jab before,” local MP Dugald Saunders said in a Facebook post.

Several other epidemics in the region also continue to grow, with six more cases detected in Bourke, two in Wellington and one each in Mudgee and Bathurst.

Four new cases were diagnosed in the predominantly indigenous town of Wilcannia in the far west of New South Wales, bringing the cluster to 58 cases.

Deputy Chief Medical Officer Michael Kidd said on Saturday that federal health officials were “very concerned” about the outbreak in the city.

“The Commonwealth has been very active in working with indigenous leaders and with local indigenous community controlled health organizations to strengthen immunization programs, to build testing capacity,” he told reporters.

“We have a team that helps and goes door to door to deliver vaccines.

“We also have the Royal Flying Doctors Service which offers vaccinations through clinics to very small and very remote communities, and of course also available to do the withdrawal if we have people who become seriously ill.”

Meanwhile, communities living on the hard Queensland-New South Wales border won’t see their checkpoints moved south anytime soon.

The Queensland government said on Friday that NSW had come to the table on the plan, but hours later NSW Deputy Premier John Barilaro said the government “vehemently opposed” the relocation of the border checkpoint to the south.

In late July, Queensland reintroduced a hard border with its southern neighbor in response to the outbreak in New South Wales, gradually tightening exemptions for interstate travel.

Arrowheads discovered in the ancient town of Daskyleion, located in Bandırma District, Western Balıkesir Province, provide important data on the history of war and hunting in the region.

Begun in 1954 and interrupted several times, excavations continue at Daskyleion, where the first settlements date back to 3000 BC. About 500 bronze and iron arrowheads have been found at Daskyleion in 35 years of these archaeological studies.

Arrowheads give clues to their intended use with their structure – for example, some of them are formed with two or three wings – and their size.

Working on the metal weapons found in the city, Özgün Kasar, professor in the archeology department at Muğla Sıtkı Koçman University, told the Anadolu Agency (AA) that the bronze arrowheads found at Daskyleion were shank arrows while iron arrowheads were used by attaching them to their handles.

An archaeologist shows arrowheads found in the ancient city of Daskyleion, Balıkesir, western Turkey on August 23, 2021. (AA Photo)

Kasar said he unearthed 93 arrowheads in a tomb during the 2012 excavation, “We believe they are related to the warrior character of one of the people in the tomb. “

Noting that they found other weapons such as daggers during their excavations, he said metal armor scales used by soldiers to protect themselves from arrows were also among the finds.

Archaeologists working in the area have dated the scales of armor to different centuries. “This armor was generally used in Daskyleion in the Middle Ages. However, there are also earlier examples. We know that rectangular armor scales were used in the 6th century BC,” Kasar said.

Shape according to intended use

Kasar also explained that they knew Daskyleion was a garden used by the Persians for hunting.

Referring to the function of arrowheads, Kasar continued, “These arrows must have been used in wars. We can see deformations on the arrowheads, such as fractures and twists in the tips. probably also used for hunting.

Kasar also pointed out that the datable arrowheads found in the ancient city belong to the years when the Persians ruled the area.

Expressing that the different shapes of arrowheads are related to their functions and effects, Kasar added, “If two-winged arrowheads had broad wings, maybe they would have been used to pierce skin. Most of the time, sharp three-winged arrowheads were used to pierce armor. It can be said that their shape, weight and size are certainly related to their intended use and that these arrowheads were used both in warfare and hunting. We had the arrowheads analyzed, which revealed heavy use of lead. It can be said that the use of lead increased durability and weight, which also improved the penetrating force. We do not yet have any solid data indicating that arrowheads were produced here, but we can say that different metal findings may have been produced at Daskyleion. “

Located on the shores of Lake Manyas, the ancient city of Daskyleion bears the traces of many civilizations that ruled Anatolia. In the 7th century BC, the famous Lydian king Daskylos came to the city of Sardis, the capital of the ancient kingdom of Lydia, due to dynastic quarrels.

Daskylos’ son Gyges was born in Daskyleion, and he was later called back to Lydia. After he became king of Lydia, the city was named Daskyleion – the place of Daskylos – around 650 BC.

Due to the natural beauty and strong geopolitical position of the area, Daskyleion was established south of the lake. When Alexander the Great decided to eliminate the Persians in 334 BC.

Prior to Alexander the Great, various states attached importance to both the political and economic control and administration of Thrace, the Straits, the Sea of Marmara and the Phrygian regions due to the importance of their geopolitical position in Anatolia and therefore protected Daskyleion as an active fortress. at each period. Due to this value, Daskyleion was carefully rebuilt by the Phrygians, Lydias, Achaemenids, Macedonians and even the Byzantines as a strong fortress, and its economy was kept at a high standard. In addition, it was run by famous administrators.

BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) – The last person jailed for being gay in Romania was released in 1998.

The country decriminalized homosexuality three years later, in 2001, while reforming its laws to qualify for membership in the European Union.

The 20th anniversary of the abolition of Section 200, which allowed prison terms of up to five years for same-sex relationships, was one of the grounds for celebration at the parade and gay pride festival which was held in the Romanian capital this month. People danced, waved rainbow flags and watched performances at Bucharest Pride 2021, an event that would have been unimaginable a generation earlier.

Yet many members of Romania’s LGBT community remain frustrated with the failure of the central European nation to go further and pass laws that would legalize same-sex unions or marriages. There are also fears of a conservative reaction to the gains made so far.

Some Romanians, influenced by the Orthodox Church, reject the growing social acceptance of lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgender people, especially among young people.

“We live in an increasingly polarized society, in which opportunities for real dialogue, education or learning are very difficult to create,” said the executive director of the Accept association, Teodora Ion-Rotaru, whose LGBT rights group organizes the annual Bucharest Pride Festival. . “This horrific cultural war that dominates Western societies is also becoming very visible and real here. “

Tension accompanied the planning of this year’s festival, said Ion-Rotaru. The local government initially denied organizers their usual location, one of the oldest boulevards in the Romanian capital, Calea Victoriei. Officials spoke of difficulties protecting an area closed to vehicle traffic on weekends.

They overturned the decision following protests and an appeal by British Ambassador to Romania Andrew Noble, who joined a protest outside Bucharest City Hall.

Ahead of the pride march, around 100 people staged a counter-demonstration while holding up religious icons and banners expressing their opposition to the demonstrated civil partnerships – and the British Ambassador. Among the participants were supporters of New Right, a political party whose slogan is “Orthodoxy and Nationalism”.

Romanian authorities have limited participation in cultural and sporting events due to the coronavirus pandemic, with the pride festival, like the protests, being limited to 500 people. Some festival supporters argued that the limit was unfair since religious gatherings have no such restrictions; a recent pilgrimage drew tens of thousands of people.

LGBT rights have recently come under attack elsewhere in Central Europe. A new law that came into force in Hungary this summer banned the portrayal of homosexuality in films, books and other content intended for audiences under the age of 18. Dozens of communities in Poland have passed largely symbolic anti-LGBT resolutions amid a conservative backlash that began more than two years ago.

In Romania, lawmakers from two parties, including a junior partner in the country’s governing coalition, plan to introduce legislation next month banning so-called “gay propaganda” in schools.

Although young Romanians increasingly support LGBT rights, too many Romanians don’t know anyone who openly identifies as gay, Ion-Rotaru said.

“It shows that we are still prisoners of invisibility,” she said, “and that our fight must be to assert our identity, to recognize it and to be known.”
